About the Client/Project: The California Western School of Law building at 350 Cedar Street, was built in 1929. It is a four-story cast-in-place concrete structure with hollow clay tile in-fill. The San Diego Historical Society has designated this building as an historic landmark. Client wanted complete tenant improvements.
Project Challenge: As a historic building that is in active operation, tenant improvements require not only a sensitivity to historic requirements, but also have to be conducted while still maintaining space for on-going classes. Modern, tiered classrooms with full technological capability were developed within the historic fabric of the building and included restrooms.
Architectural Solution: Platt/Whitelaw provided tenant improvements in separate projects—some of them phased—and complete A/E services from design through construction support for this historic structure. Over time, each floor of the building is being remodeled and renovated. Projects have included a lobby with reception desk, two large tiered lecture halls, two large classrooms with video conference capabilities, multiple other classrooms and seminar rooms, administrative offices, library, reception and workroom areas, restrooms, elevators and support spaces. All spaces are designed with state-of-the-art audio/visual and data systems. Green building materials are also incorporated into the design. HVAC systems were provided to serve the remodeled spaces. Exterior improvements made to the building included new signage, screening of existing equipment, and new exterior colors complementing the school campus’ adjacent buildings. In 2014, we remodeled the basement which included upgrades to the computer study room, a new, and office space for student organizations.
Final Result: Repeat work, and a great long-term relationship with the client.
