Bud Kearns Memorial Swimming Pool

About the Client/Project

Exterior

Native San Diegans remember learning to swim at the Historic Bud Kearns Memorial Pool. An iconic destination in Balboa Park (Morley Field area) since 1932 – it provides community and health benefits as well as social interaction. The 90-year-old swimming pool required infrastructure upgrades to meet current health department regulations.

Project Challenge

During construction, while digging in the basement, fuel oils were discovered in the sub-grade soils. Immediate mitigation measures were initiated, including removal of the contaminated soils and close air quality monitoring.

Architectural Solution

Architectural effort included the replacement of pool mechanical systems (pump and motor), a new water recirculation system, new sub-grade surge chamber, pool inlets and returns replacement, deck edging and surface replacement, pool stairs replacement, and compliant pool markings. Renovation upgrades include recirculation of the water – a big cost savings for the city and more appropropriate for our water-starved, drought-prone region. ADA improvements including path of travel, upgrades in the Men’s and Women’s Restrooms, drinking fountain replacement and signage. Additionally, gate and enclosure upgrades were included to meet compliance standards. The architect guided this beautiful renovation through project planning and construction, carefully adhering to Interior Standards for the Preservation of Historic Properties. The historic structure retains its characteristic charm while significantly reducing water use.

Final Result

The project was awarded APWA Project of the Year 2022.
