El Centro Aquatic Center is Open for Fun
The excitement has been building. The El Centro Aquatic Center is OPEN!
Platt/Whitelaw Architects is thrilled to have been a part of this phenomenal aquatic center, which celebrated its grand opening on October 26.
The center features a competition pool, warm-up pool, activity pool and lazy river, as well as a multi-use room for classes and events. Also included are offices and lifeguard/first aid facilities. A separate building houses pool equipment, lockers and showers, a concession area and storage.
“This is one of the best aquatic facilities I’ve seen,” said Ben Hueso, California State Senator, 40th District, who attended the grand opening. “Very few cities in our state have facilities of this quality.”
Platt/Whitelaw Architects served as architectural consultants to civil engineering company (and prime consultant) Kimley-Horn for El Cento Aquatic Center. Other team members included: aquatic consultant Aquatic Design Group; structural engineer Aark Engineering; mechanical engineer Bender Dean Engineering; electrical engineer EPI Engineering; cost estimator Campbell-Anderson & Associates; general contractor Hamel Contracting Inc.; and construction manager Erickson Hall Construction.
City of El Centro Mayor Edgard Garcia also attended the opening and said, “I am extremely proud of all of the efforts from everyone in the city that made this project possible. All of our community partners, the construction crew…it’s really overwhelming to see how this has come out.”
The aquatic center design and building program was guided by design charettes with the community and meetings with future aquatic facility staff and users to make sure it responded to the needs and vision of the community.
City of El Centro councilmember Cheryl Viegas-Walker called the aquatic center “the project of a lifetime,” and continued, “It really is going to be here for generations to come. I have been looking forward to this day for a very, very long time. I’m just giddy. I walk around here, and I can’t get the smile off my face.”
We’re proud to have been part of this project. Congratulations to the City of El Centro and everyone who made the El Centro Aquatic Center a reality!
